Last year, I did the most basic person thing ever and went apple picking. It actually sounded pretty fun, so while I was down in L.A. for the weekend to go to Disneyland, we made it a point to set aside one day for this. I was pretty excited to put on my plaid and also get these apple cider donuts I heard so much about.
We drove a couple hours south to Oak Glen, where there a bunch of orchards and wineries. It was actually pretty hot outside so it felt a bit more like summer than fall, but it was still fun to spend the day outside. It’s all rustic feeling at Snow Line Orchards, the place where we went to get our shiny red apples!
We actually collected a decent amount between the group, and paid for it at one of the weighing stations. I feel like these apples probably cost the same amount as getting organic produce, but somehow it feels more rewarding that you picked it yourself, you know? And as long as I washed the fruit thoroughly, it was okay to eat for me!
Snow Line also has a shop where you can purchase ciders and other apple related goods. They also have a back space that houses their winery as well. I purchased a couple of the ciders to take back home, and this Cherry Apple Cider was so good! It was the perfect amount of sweet and tart for me. They also have a few ciders that are out on display to sample. The raspberry one tasted a little too medicinal to justify buying a whole bottle.
And this was one of the reasons we came out to apple pick! My cousins had talked about how amazing these apple cider donuts were, and judging by the line when we got there, everyone thought so too. And they totally lived up to the hype. The line moves faster than you think, and you can see them making the donuts while waiting in line. It’s so mesmerizing watching the machine pipe out donuts. The mini apple cider donuts are addicting and so soft. They’re warm and chewy and spicy and sweet thanks to the cinnamon sugar on top. Definitely worth checking out!
Before leaving the area, we had one last stop to make. It took us a little bit of time to find it since no one could remember the name of the location, but eventually we made it. I also took a picture of the eatery so no one will forget again! It’s called Angus McCurdy’s and I heard rave reviews about their Pumpkin Pie shake. Literally, they take a piece of pie, break it into chunks, and incorporate it into your milkshake! Unfortunately, they were out by the time we got there, so I settled with an apple pie milkshake instead, which was also really good! We also ate some chili fries too because after all that hard work, we were starving.
Overall, it was a fun time getting into the fall mood properly – even if we do have that sunny California weather!
